Finding the Best and Healthiest Low Carb Diet

,
By James Steele

Not that long ago, carbohydrates were considered healthy, and people went out of their way to consume them. This is because it was well understood that carbohydrates are good for energy and for "bulking up." It was carbs that were identified as the catalyst for high performance if you were an athlete or just someone needing a boost. Lately, though, this theory has been completely overturned, and carbs are now widely considered the worst type of food you can eat. The notion that carbs are not healthy and should be avoided is, of course, an oversimplification at best. Rather than trying to avoid carbohydrates altogether, it's best to focus on ones that are healthy and natural, and to eat these in moderate quantities -so a low carb diet, with some modifications, is actually a good idea. Once you learn the basics, you'll find that sticking to a low carb diet isn't painful at all. Check it out:

Eating out is not always good for a diet, so choose roasted items from the menu. There should be something that is roasted, even though practically everything on the menu will be either fried or braised. Vegetables that have been roasted rather than fried are a better choice. When making a choice if you must have a potato rather than a salad, choose roasted potatoes over French fries. The problem with braised or fried foods is the oil and high carb ingredients that are involved, so your best choice when going out to eat is having food that is roasted.

Not everyone realizes that vegetables contain carbohydrates, but in low quantities, and the healthy kind. Carrots, cauliflower and broccoli especially are great tasting, filling and low carbohydrate snacks.

Did you know that tortillas are full of carbs? Foods made from tortillas can be quite delicious. The problem is, tortillas contain unhealthy carbohydrates and they also tend to be high in sodium. Instead of wrapping up the food in a tortilla, why not simply eat the ingredients out of a bowl or off of a plate? This is sort of like ordering a sandwich without the bread, only these foods are so spicy and flavorful that it's likely you won't even miss the tortilla. The only food that won't work as well for this tactic is the quesadilla but, depending on the cheese you choose, it might be a food you should skip altogether.

Skip the tortillas! You may be a devotee of burritos, tostadas and other Mexican specialties. Unfortunately, tortillas are rich in the bad kinds of carbohydrates (even the ones made from corn) and typically have other ingredients like salt contribute to health problems. Instead of wrapping up the food in a tortilla, why not simply eat the ingredients out of a bowl or off of a plate? This is sort of like ordering a sandwich without the bread, only these foods are so spicy and flavorful that it's likely you won't even miss the tortilla. One Mexican delicacy you may have to remove from your diet using this principle is the quesadilla, which can't really be made without a tortilla. Fortunately, you can eat a low carb diet and still enjoy many different foods. You may have assumed that reducing carbs is one of the hardest things in the world. You just have to take a look at all of the foods that are still available to you. Any food, such as cereal, pasta or bread, can be made using alternative, low carb ingredients. You've probably overlooked many of these foods until now. Some people find that they need personal guidance when going on a diet; if this is you, schedule a visit with your doctor or other health care professional. They will help you figure out your path.
